Walking In Gatehouse

Dumfries and Galloway is well known for its picturesque landscape and amazing light, which is one of the reasons why we have such a high number of incredible artists in the local area.

If you like getting out and about and exploring the great outdoors we have put together some ideas for you.

One of the great things about our luxury lodges is that they are set in an amazing location, just outside the charming town of Gatehouse of Fleet.

One of our favourite walks is to simply walk from the lodge into Gatehouse of Fleet.  On leaving the lodge simply follow the gravel road to the site entrance, take a left at the Gatehouse Luxury Lodge sign and head down the hill, follow this road all the way down to the main road at the bottom.  Across the road, you will see a wooden gate called “robbers gate” go through this gate and you are into the Cally Woods.  From here it is signposted into Gatehouse of Fleet.  When you reach Gatehouse, we highly recommend going to the Galloway Country Style for a great coffee and amazing cakes!

One the way back to Gatehouse Luxury Lodges you can then decide if you want to walk back along the main road, out of the top end of the town or you can explore the Cally Wood.  If you feeling energetic you can walk from the Galloway Lodge all the way to Sandgreen Beach.  You simply have to head to the Cally Palace, when you get here keep walking past it and the path will take you under the bypass.  This Bridleway then goes on for another 2 miles or so all the way to Sandgreen Holiday Park.  We like to walk it, but our children bring their bikes as you can cycle the whole way.

Sand Green Beach and Carrick beach are well worth the walk from the lodge!

The Big Water of Fleet Viaduct

The girls playing next to the river

The viaduct at Gatehouse of Fleet is a stunning piece of engineering which spans the fleet outside of the village. It was built in 1877 and is over 75 feet tall and 300 feet wide and its the largest granite viaduct in the world.

From the top, you get an amazing view of the surrounding area and there is a great walk from the visitor’s centre. It’s a circular walk that takes about an hour to complete. The walk passes through some amazing countryside which is beautiful at any time of the year.

The walk starts at the car Cairnsmore of Fleet visitor centre

From the car park, there is signposted path around and over the viaduct. The walk is suitable for all ages and abilities. There are however, some stepping stones over the river. There are also some river pools which are great to swim on warmer days!
